Where I live, Goodwill takes old computer equipment. I don't know if they're operating from a grant or what but computer equipment is on their receipt checklist. I never assume they're accepting old computer equipment, I always ask. So far, it's been fine. I've dropped off several old laptops. Of course there is no shortage of places that will accept electronics re-cycling by the pound for a fee but I avoid those places.
