Re: ADVANCED SEARCH OPTION didn't work for me

Yes, I've seen those "features," and in my humble opinion, they're not worth very much. The problem is that anyone can post their family files up to Ancestry, whether or not the information has been verified or cited, and much, probably most, of the information contained within those family trees is bad.
Years ago, I learned the HARD way about taking any of that information as valid. I was working on my daughter's Louisiana line (Verdun, Olivier, Boutte, Richard, Charles, and several others) and I got a "hit" in one of the online family trees, with much of the information matching what I had, so I downloaded that file and merged it into my own. I didn't bother to make a note of where this information came from, nor did I bother to verify any of it prior to the merge, because, since I found it on the internet, it just HAD to be true, right?
Years later, when I was doing some active research on that line, I tried to verify some of that merged information and found out that it was a TOTAL mess of conflicting information, no citations, just awful research. But by then, it was impossible to tell which information came from where, because it wasn't the only file I'd merged with my own. Hundreds and hundreds of names, dates of birth, children, etc., and most of it was worthless.
In the end, I deleted that whole file and started over, from scratch. I cannot begin to tell you how many hours I've spent re-creating that family file, but now I know it's correct.
I don't know if you understand my point. ANYTHING posted on the internet needs to be verified, no matter badly we want to make that familial connection. The family trees on Ancestry.com ... not worth much, in my humble opinion. Some of the information is valid, I'm sure, but with no standards or guidelines for submission, you're playing with a loaded gun.
All the best to you in your research.
