I know my nephew runs a couple of surname pages on FB and he's had a good deal of success in making connections without the use of any additional tools. I'd be curious to know how you plan to use this servcice if or when they get it working. I've just found in general, people who are not just "into genealogy", are reluctant to join yet another service where they might need to keep track of another user id and password for something that they use occasionally.
