What I find productive with newspapers is to
1....use one word in the search box
2.... pit that word in " " marks
3.... restrict search time to one year
4.... restrict the year to 3 months
5..... move to the next year in 3 month chunks

I generally use "keywords" depending on the site. Sometimes it is just by gosh and by golly.
Incidentally the Atlanta Daily World has family operated very limited number of staff and as far as I can determine they are assigned to marketing and production. None is assigned to research.
