Re: Need help with the "Search" Feature at Ancestr

Hello Gail,

Any mention of Ohio catches my eye. :D

I'm an AA Ohio researcher and on Ancestry I use the AA filter when searching Census records.

When I get 'stuck" I often resort to using just the county and/or township, no names. This will "show only the results for those noted as people of color (1850-1930)".

This search result is shown in sequence 1st by birth year, then county, then surname.

If you add the County in Ohio the results will be shown in sequence by birth year then name (given, surname).

This may sound cumbersome, but knowing the sequence of the results listing helps in quickly 'zeroing' in on your folks by name and birth year. This method also will get around all spelling variations used for names... initials, given & surnames.

Wildcards and using the given names for parents & spouses can help, but often the idea of "less is better" and then scrolling thru the result list may be of greater benefit.

Hope this helps,
~Art
