I use both FTM and RM though not the latest versions of either of the two. If you're a genealogy software beginner, you can't really go wrong with either of these programs. FTM is published by ancestry.com and so presumeably will integrate well with the ancestry.com website. FTM went through a bad experience with one of the previous versions (2008 or 2009) but I think that they've put that all behind them in their latest version. Some of the major issues in that version were related to upgrading from previous versions and previous features that were missing from the upgraded version. FTM is a very popular program and there is a lot of help available out there in case you run in to a problem.
I started using RM for one reason, you could add photos to the narrative report. People love it. You can buy Gensmarts to allow RM to mesh well with ancestry.com and other online research sites. I'm very happy with the program.
As far as I know all of the major programs support importing and exporting gedcom file formats so you can move your research from program to program with relative ease so that you are not stuck if you decide you do not like the choice you made and want to change.
