Thanks. All of the suggestions have been helpful. So far, I've gathered up all of my little pieces of paper and filed them the best I could...which includes a "to be filed" file. I bought $10 plastic storage boxes from Office Depot. That really does work well because I can drag the file out to work on it and not be stuck going back and forth to a stationary cabinet.

I took the two main branches of my family and re-organized notebooks so that information can be filed by individual. The first thing in the file is a record of my census search for that individual.

A friend - who listens when I ramble on about my genealogy - got be a external hard drive for Christmas, so I can start saving stuff on my computer.

I am still looking for a computer program, but I'm in the process of moving, so it will have to wait until I get settled again.
