Re: Organizing my Research - Help!!

Google "Genealogy Software"+Mac for a list of available software for MacIntosh. Hopefully they have trial versions you can download and play around with. Whatever program you feel comfortable with, decide to get the full version and use, make sure it allows you to create and export a GEDCOM, as well as import a GEDCOM from as many other genealogy programs as possible. A Gedcom is a special text format to share and exchange genealogy trees and their sources and citations. For the user, once created, it makes life easier when testing programs. It's not completely error free but you don't have to recreated your tree when moving to another program for testing. Export it from your last program, import it to your new program. A GEDCOM will be like your best friend. I may not always be right, but when you need its Data, it's always there!

For your niece and other family members, depending on your niece's age, write a short narritive about your families, which includes your sibling, her parents. At some point create a chart that includes your niece's generation and shared ancestors. I've found that there is always someone in each family, with a desire to research the family history. In your immediate family group, It may not be the person that you expected to pass on your research. For me that Aha moment was an 1880 census transcription and a 1981 family reunion program. I also found 6 or more of my cousins doing our family history research.
