Un-organized data can become a nightmare -- after all, what is the point of going to the library to photocopy it, or paying to have someone send it to you, if you can't FIND it to refer to it when you want to. Binders work for me. One for each major branch (however you define them) of the family. If they get unwieldy, split them. I keep a family tree in front, so I can refer to it when I'm looking at the papers. Info that doesn't fit yeat for the family -- the "supposed to be connected" or "must-be-connected" are stuck in the back.
For some years I put off getting a database for the computer (back in the late 1980's). Once I got Family Tree Maker (I'm sure others are wonderful too) I realized How helpful and easy a computer database is when you are working with large numbers of people.
So check out a couple of genealogy programs and start entering data as you sort your paperwork into files or binders.
