Re: ancestry.com transcription errors
In Response To: ancestry.com transcription errors ()
Anyone using a database such as Ancestry, where people are transcribing original documents (in varying degrees of clarity) is certain to come upon misreadings and outright errors. I'm sure the transcriptions must have been done MONTHS if not years ago. I believe their current policy is to flag such items with a triangle and an "alternate reading" note or somesuch. They have done so in several cases I have sent in. Your frustration serves as a reminder to everyone working with a transcribed database -- DO NOT TRUST THE INDEX for Ancestry or anyones cemetery reading or will transcription or whatever. If the names are similar or close or related to those of 'your' people ALWAYS check the original. And when the original is in poor condition -- get the opinion of several genealogy 'buddies' who may read the finding with a more neutral, but interested, point of view. Messages In This Thread
