Facebook is a little different.

If you type 'genealogy' in the search field, you get all of the various groups including AFRIGENEAS! Yay! Then you can see who the members are and decide to join (or not).

When you enter your text in the "What's on your mind?" field, all of your friends will see your post. Now, I think if they respond to your post, then their friends can see their response to you. I believe they can, in turn, join in the conversation. That's a way to build a network.
