Here's how TinyURL works.

If you want to send a link to someone and it's a zillion characters long; Tinyurl will shrink that URL down to about 25 characters.

Check out this URL:
http://www.afrigeneas.com/forum-tech/index.cgi?md=read;id=1677

If you go to http://tinyurl.com and enter the above url in the box, it will generate a new URL like this:
http://tinyurl.com/crhlu6

As you can see it's much shorter and it will lead you to the same place. We all have seen long URLs that wrap to a second line which are a pain to copy n' paste. TinyURL to the rescue!

That's why you see it a lot on Twitter, since you only have 140 characters to work with.
