I have not had the occasion yet to view slaves in Tennessee, however, generally slaves were counted as taxable personal property, particularly those over 16 yrs of age. I have seen some personal property tax lists before 1800, that listed by first names those slaves the owner was taxed on. Generally, just a number of the slaves taxed was annotated on the list with no names.
