[VA] Virginia slave research

Hi,

I've never done any research pertaining to slaves in Pre-Civil War Virginia before. Are there any valuable resources I can start with? I would like to learn more about the Pre-Civil roots of my great-great grandfather's[Marcellus Mack] mother's family in Richmond and Fauquier county, Virginia. His mother, Frances LEWIS, along with her father and siblings were sold by a slave trader in Virginia and brought to New Orleans in the 1850s. From there, they made their way to Natchitoches Parish. Frances's father, Daniel Lewis, was a slave of John MARTIN in Fauqier County, Virginia.
