AfriGeneas States Research Forum

[MS] Research Group
In Response To: [MS] Joining a Society ()

I actually don't do this and hope I am not stepping on toes. In MS it is difficult to find a Afro Amer Genealogy Society. I have heard of it being tried and not really getting off to a good start..low attendance.

Mississippi Afro Amer Genealagy Group.. a NEW facebook page has been launched to help all of us who have ancestors who were born in and migrated from the area. People who have done research for their people in different counties are joining to help each other navigate the court houses, hotels, eateries, towns and whatever else needed to know as a black person stepping into a southern town.
I have met so many people who live outside of Mississippi in other genealogy groups that talk about, their people from the state. They say they WOULD JOIN a Society if it organized there, but a lot of it means, sometimes, to get someone to do some research for them. Can't do that. It cost time and money. And there are societies with satellite groups. It almost seems like people are afraid to go there to do any prolonged onsite research, if you don't KNOW somebody in the town. Believe me, when they say 'they roll up the sidewalks at 6pm', in some places that is a fact. No one is out when it is dark.

We are trying to break down these brick southern walls to find records about our family living and deceased. We want to know the do's and donts of the present society of today. And some want to decide if it is time to come home. Presently we have a temporary Moderator, Hal Smith who has designed a temp site. He is a admin/moderator of many other Mississippi Fb pages including his own Carroll Co Ms.

WE need, and is looking for someone who is knowledgeble about the towns in the state. We want new members who have done research anywhere in MS and can bring to the table information about their experience WHERE they did their on site research. We would like to build this one site into a strong one and make it a sister to AfriGeneas, Rootsweb, Cyndislist, Family Search and any other free site to help our new griots to learn the basics and know where to get the answers. So many know just 2 places. We need a permanent MODERATOR for our new facebook page.
Take a look. Drop in. Add it to your list. We people of color must support all positive sites. Each one helps someone.

Tell me have you heard of a large workshop or travel group going to the state for a conference? WHY NOT? ;)
