I am not sure if this is the correct forum to put this on so I will leave it up to the forum managers...Mississippi has not had a Afro Amer Genealogy Society. I know of 2 attempts to form them, but participation from what I heard was weak. I have always wondered why there have never been any workshops sponsored by the popular lg Societies that tvl and sponsor the oppurtunities. I lg society said, it was because there was no interest to attend in the state.
I would like to know, if there was a Afro American Society in the State of Mississippi in existance, would you join as a pd member, regardless of where you live. Societies need funds to operate. They do not collect salaries. You need in the county where the society operates, dedicated volunteers of all ages. We need a Afro Amer Society to represent us in this state. To many of our ancestors left this place to try to live a better life. Also by joining a Society, you can not expect people to be available to cater to your research needs. Remember ..it is a new organization. Volunteers.
Facebook has it's pages for states, but you cant always find THE ONE you may need unless someone passes it on to you.
So here is the question again.. would you support a pay for membership Society and it's facebook page for a Afro Amer Mississippi County State Genealogy Society, regardless if it was the area your people came from and their Facebook page? We have to start somewhere.
