Re: [DC] Suggestions for looking up a living relat

I would do it, but in a discreet manner, don't give out too much info.

What I did a few years ago, I was looking for info and family on a guy who I thought was my relative, I used those sites I listed for you to use, a lot of times the possible relatives can be misleading or give wrong people as relatives. Well, they had a guy listed as a possible relative of a person, he was about 20 years older than the person, so I assumed it was the person's father. What I did was post a message on this guy and I included names that people may recongize, but I didn't identify who they were (like son, daughter, father, etc.), I also uploaded small, cropped thumbnail pictures of the person just to make sure I don't get somebody TRYING to make a connection when there's no connection to be made.

About 2 months later I got in contact with those who were related to me, and the rest is history. So be discreet with information, and don't give out personal info like date of births, place of births, addresses, phone numbers, things like that. If you give names, don't identify who they are unless you are sure they are deceased.

Sometimes you may be looking for children or descendants of two people (John and Jane Doe), and you list the names of the children so people can recognize the names, that's ok, long as you don't give out too much info to identify if they are still living.
