[AL] Reading Initiative
The state superintendent of education is seeking another big funding increase for the Alabama Reading Initiative that would put it in nearly every Alabama elementary school by the summer of 2006.
Superintendent Joe Morton presented a budget request to Alabama legislators Monday that included increasing the funding for the Alabama Reading Initiative from $40 million this year to $55 million next year. The program’s funding this year was a dramatic increase from the $12.5 million it received last year.
Morton said the program has significantly increased reading skills in most schools where it is used, and it has had an unexpected byproduct: more parental involvement in schools where it is used.
“We know very clearly this is a winning program," he said.
