[MS] School Children
This was posted long ago by Mz Rudd--Educable Children List in Mississippi Counties. I'd like to remind and renew the idea to anyone who has not looked and charted your surnames on this list. It can be found at Familysearch.org. Essentially what it does is, on some years give the name of head of households, which most the time is the man--but not always, the name of the student, age and name of school. For the 'colored, it is best to go to the last page and back up. I found the 'white students are always listed in the beginning of the list. None of the names are indexed. For some counties there's only one year. Others may go from 1889-1937. I was able to follow my ggrandfather in a 2nd household. It was on the census but confirmed on this list. You may wonder what is the point. Some family got lost. Some of our family was found in other Counties and their childrens names helped me to confirm new heritage. School list was used by these counties to qualify for money, even if the children did not attend school but were school age. I must say here I viewed the Monroe Co. Ms Educable list at the Jackson, Ms Archives and got a copy of the list that is not published here. My list has information that is later than what they show and under my gggranfathers name. I also saw names of people with children in the households that had different surnames. We have to remember these were x-slaves and some families took in children that sometimes were related to other family or children they simply took into the family. Every list is not online at this time. Possibly because they are too old to handle. I suggest you make a chart sheet of the name of the county you found positive information as well as ALL surnames you are interested in. It makes for good late night reading when the mind might be clearer.
