Cynthia gave you good advice and I will just add my two cents.

Check the Archives website to see what is available. I have provided the page to check what is available in your county of research - Just click on your county -

I agree with Cynthia, spend your time while you are at the Archives, searching for information you can't find anywhere else. You want to make the most of your time and your trip.

Be as prepared as you can be, bring your lists with as much information as you have.

Have your soundex code for your surnames. Some records require the soundex code.

Check your county courthouse to see if there were any courthouse house fires that destroyed records. If you know a particular group of records was destroyed, you can invest your time with another group.

A researcher staple, death records, are available at the Archives, years 1912-1943. The records are on microfilm and microfiche. Bring a magnifying glass with you because some segments of these records are difficult to read.

Bring pencils, and paper. You can bring in your laptop but no cameras. You are not allowed to make copies using cameras.

Copies are .20 each on the copy machines and .25 each if the staff makes copies from special collections. There is only one copier that takes change. You can put dollars on the ID card you are provided when you check into the Archives to use on copier. The money is not refundable, so, put on the card the dollar amount closest to what you will actual use.

The staff is friendly and helpful. Just remember there are researchers visiting with various levels of experience and a staff member may be stretched handling various needs before she can get to you, bring along a little patience.

Come, research and discover.
