Try emailing the Newberry Library, they have some African-American genealogy records. Railroads required their employees to have social sec #'s. I was able to get a copy of someone's original ssn application and it displayed his parents' names, including his mother's maiden name. At the time I thought that person was one of my uncles but it turns out he was not.
