No man of color was as widely known in this community as the deceased and no more generally respected. He was a member of many civic organizations, and had long served with distinction as an officer of the volunteer troops, being major of the colored battalion, by commission of the governor of the state. Ever faithful in the performance of duty, ever cheerful, and of extreme courtesy in manner, he was respected by whites and blacks alike, and properly regarded as a worthy citizen. The general attendance of his funeral yesterday was the of the esteem. "
