So cynthia, you're saying death certificates are better to order?
I was thinking about and trying to order SSA's for most of my Hawkins family, for one, trying to figure out the maiden name of my 2nd great grandmother, for another, trying to research their footsteps and to answer when and where, and put dates and places down as it relates to the family story(-ies).
I figured death certificates were and came later in life and were written by someone other than the person, and depending on who's giving the information, the information is as good as the informant's knowledge of the person.
Mine problems are opposite than your's, I find SSA's to be more trustworthy than DC's, because it is written/signed/filled out by the person. I can see why you trust DC's more, if you have people who are not honest about themselves and are doing criminal like activities. My problem is opposite, people tend to be more honest when they are younger because they haven't reached that part of life yet where they lie about who they are, especially since and if the records are federal and it's about getting benefits.
My only drawback in ordering the SSA's, is I am trying to find a record that confirms a last name for my 2nd great grandmother that family says is her maiden name. But DC's and obits give what I think is actually her mother's "married" name. So I am afraid they all are gonna say the same, SSA's and DC's.
SSA's are earlier than DC's, but they are expensive, there are for known ones for me to order and it will cost me $162.00, trying to get the cost by finding a record either free or less than $20 that will give me the info I need. Don't want to pay for something that's, not the wrong person, but all gonna say the same thing.
Would like to hear more about the DC's...
