Hello all,

My name is Crystal Allen. I traced my family on my great-
grandfather's side from Nansemond County in VA to Halifax County, NC.
I visited Halifax County and went to the courthouse to do research.

There are very few birth/death/marriage records that exist for
Halifax. I am looking in the time period of 1860/1870. I found them
on the census for 1870.

Any suggestions? How can I find out if they were slaves.

The slave records are kind of confusing listing only an
initial and last name. The names are Isham Allen, brother Isaac.
Isham's daughter, Sarah Allen (my gg grandmother). Isham and Isaac
mother's name was Luvenia. The reason I know this is because Isham
remarried in Virginia and on his marriage records from Virginia, he
listed his mother's name as Luvenia Allen. No father was listed.
