Re: [TN] Wilson County--HACKNEY

That IS an interesting story but no relation to mine. My 2ndgrgr-uncle was in the USCT and was wounded when one of his fellow soldier's gun caught on the stairs as they were walking up to the dorms and he was shot in the back and shoulder. He was left with a local "colored family" (The Hackneys) to be taken care of when his unit had to leave the area.

I had been searching for any corroboration of the story--since the pension proceedings seemed to want to cast doubts as to the truthfulness of his story. I FINALLY found the Hackney family listed in the census yesterday! I had been looking for them in 1870 and later, assuming (you know what THAT gets you ;)) that they had been slaves and that was as soon as I would be able to find them. I was QUITE surprised to discover them in both the 1850 and 1860 census!
