[IL] Civil War Soldiers

I'm still researching free blacks who served during the Civil War. I am blessed to be able to view Bennie's web site. (But, my cataracts need to be removed from both eyes and will after my blood pressure goes down.)

This is interesting. A lot is made of the 54th Massachusetts. I don't want to take anything away from them. They served well. However, the 55th Massachusetts served along with them. Little is said about the 55th which was formed after those who made it to Readville, Massachusetts to enlist got there after the quota for the 54th was met.

Several of these were free blacks from Illinois including some who might prove to be on my tree. It is also interesting that some of the blacks enlisting at Natchez, Mississippi gave their location of birth as Illinois. There were a lot of free blacks living in Illinois from the late 1700s and many were kidnapped, taken south, and sold. Now this skews my research. Click on the link below and check for any familiar names among the list of blacks from Illinois serving during the Civil War.
