Well, whoever suggested going to the cooking part of this website, thank you, thank you. There is a California cookbook on there, 1911, Negro women's cookbook, with handwritten recipes added on, and its all online! There are cookbooks online from Pullman Porter chefs. There's a lot of cool stuff there. I suppose history is kind of like the old story, the route to someone's heart might be through their stomach! I'm particularly interested in all the boiled salad dressings. Boiled? I can't wait to read/try things and see how they taste.
