[VA] Orrick of MD, VA, WVA

Are Orrick and Strange families of Winchester, VA related?

The African-American Orrick family of Winchester, VA may be associated with the slaveholding Orrick family of Berkeley Springs/Bath in Berkeley/Morgan County VA/W.VA. The white Orrick family includes Nicholas, Cromwell, and Johnson Orrick, a Confederate who died of injuries in the Civil War.

A woman named Margaret Orrick (born c. 1782) was a resident of Winchester, VA in 1850. Her African-American (FPOC) neighbors included a household headed by Fannie Strange. Robert Orrick (1840-1902) was an African-American Methodist minister who also owned a sucessful business as a liveryman. He was a contemporary of AME minister Jacklin Strange (1836-1922) also born in Winchester.

Orrick and Strange were both associated with John Mann Methodist Church in Winchester, as well as other Virginia churches. Robert Orrick's parents may be John and Evalina Orrick. They lived in adjoining households in Winchester in 1870. Evalina Orrick (c. 1802-1880) was described as a prosperous free black resident of Winchester, a "six-foot-tall mother of twenty-six children (five by white men)" in Ervin L. Jordan's Black Confederates and Afro-Yankees in Civil War Virginia, p. 87 (University of Virginia Press, 1995)
