Plantations and slaves were not just in the South. I have been researching slavery in Illinois for quite a few years now. It amazes me that our federal government entered agreements with slaveholders to allow them to bring their slaves into Illinois and work as long as the slaves did not stay in the State of Illinois for the whole year. They were not residents of Illinois and thereby not considered free in the free State of Illinois.

This living history/theatrical program will present all sides of the Matson Slave Trial story:
· Explore the reasons why Lincoln, the Great Emancipator, would represent an enslaver.
· Test your preconceived notions and evaluate how we mythologize our leaders.
· Discover the social and economic issues that allowed Matson to prosper as an enslaver.
· Learn how the Bryants courageously took action and bravely trusted the legal system to protect their freedom.
· Trace the arguments and court proceedings that will restore your faith in our legal system.
· And confront the moral dilemma of taking public action on your beliefs for social justice despite the consequences.

The Trial and Tribulations Program

Program participants will begin by interacting with seven of the main characters in the story at two historic sites; enjoy an 1847 meal; and conclude with a theatrical presentation about the trial.
