Yes, sadly, Laurel's fate was unbelieveable. There was a major road paved right down the middle of it. It took place during the Marvin Mandel era. He approved this when he was Governor of Maryland. Not enough of us stepped forward to stop it. They did not even relocate but a handful of existing graves.

This is why I am fighting so hard to save Mt. Auburn. As long as we don't stand up and be heard, more and more of our history will be "paved over" almost as if we never existed.

With a 26 million dollar project and revitalization going on all around Mt. Auburn, if we don't persistantly persue and stand strong in unity, that might also be the fate of the cemetery. Along with no viable maps of grave locations the "powers that be" could easily claim its sacred grounds.
