Alice, check the Raleigh state archives. I went there to look for papers on Orange and Durham counties. They had a large box of misc slave documents from Orange County. In this box, I found many bills of sale (two of which I've posted on this site, as well as many emancipation papers (which I have listed on the site), I found wills listing my family and giving me the information I was looking for about a previous owner, a bill of sale for my cousin's great great grandfather, mention of many slaves and their owners. I would recommend ANYONE in NC to visit! I captured a lot of information with my digital camera and for less than 100 dollars, arranged to have all of the slave papers copied and sent to me (1000 pages),it was the best money I could have spent! I plan to do the same with Granville, Person and Wake counties. They have papers for the entire state!
