I recently came across a pamphlet listing certified African American teachers in Pickens, South Carolina. I found four of my relatives who were listed as teachers from 1871-1896. The pamphlet does not say their qualifications.
From what I know of my family before the Civil War, they were free farmers. Isn't it unusual for a family to have four teachers?
