Found one reference outside "Killing Mr Watson" trilogy to possible peonage/killing by Watson:
American Heritage Magazine February/March 1981 account "The Woods were tossing with Jewels" by a MArie St John b. 1894 whose father was a white Sharecropper who worked for Watson and allegedly was only worker ever paid by Watson for work.
