Re: [PA] Black History Website
In Response To: [PA] Black History Website ()

On African American migrations to south central Pennsylvania, we are almost finished transcribing the 1920 census of African Americans in Steelton, Pennsylvania. As you may know, the steel companies recruited heavily in Virginia and Maryland from the 1870's to the beginning of World War I. This is clearly shown in the census data, and will be evident when we get the data online in about a month.

Barbara Barksdale, of the Friends of Midland Cemetery Association, provided the copies of the census. I'm excited about this project because it identifies the major African American neighborhoods, family groups, states of origin, and occupations. When we put this information together with other data that we have, we should be able to come up with a relatively accurate and complete "snapshot" of African American migration near the end of the "Great Migration."
