[NC] Descendants of Hertford Co NC Free People of Color
I am currently working on a collaborative effort to complete a book about the Hertford County, North Carolina community of free people of color and their descendants. The book will cover the period 1600-1970. The names of the families that have historically been a part of this community are: Archer, Nickens, Weaver, Manley, Hall, Reynolds, Melton, Bizzell, Boone, Jones, Reid, Chavis, Collins, Keene, Trummell, Wiggins, Cotton, Greene, Simmons, Pugh, Williamson, Shoecraft, Cumbo, Smith, Lewis, Catus, Robbins, Bass, Brown, Sears, Newsome, Luton, Pierce, Turner, Pope, Mitchell, Flood, Scott, Hare, Lang, Garnes, Smothers, Best, Manning, Walden, Daniels, Hale, Anderson, Whitfield, Britt, Butler, Stafford, James, Overton, Wyatt, Hunter, Cone, and Burke. Many members have moved on to other places including, Virginia, Tennessee, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Washington, D. C., New York, and Pennsylvania, but are still important to the story of the community. If you would like to contribute information or have pictures of members of these families please contact me at wemilteer@hotmail.com I am also interested in items pertaining to farming and industry in the county, the Waters Normal Institute (C. S. Brown), Pleasant Jordan, Daniel Valentine, Noah Cotton, and Starkey S. Harrell. Many documents and pictures have already been collected for this important project. Don’t miss your chance to add your part to the story! Thank you, Warren Milteer, Jr.
