If Margaret Simmons was first identified in VA, she probably immigrated there from England as an indentured servant. Everyone working on these families should spend time to read the introduction and narrative of Paul Heinegg's "Free African Americans in VA, NC, etc." website, especially, so you get an idea of the historical context for the names and places. Read as much colonial and antebellum history as you can, too, there is much history which helps tell you what was going on at the time. Genealogy sites always tell you to start with what you have and go back. With people in FL in the 1950s, you might be able to check census info to find other members of their families, including their parents. Or, with a GA birthplace for Louise and her birthdate, maybe you can find her and her family or origin in the 1930 census (this is the last that's available for public research - many libraries have subscriptions to www.ancestry.com or other groups that publish access to databases), and go back. Good luck on your search. Messages In This Thread |
