Re: [VA] John Esten Cooke & African-American famil

Please substitute this correction for previous post: John Esten Cooke & African-American family

Eveylin/Eveline/Evalina Williams (c. 1800-1880+) was employed in 1880 as a household servant in Clarke Co., VA. Her employer, Virginia writer John Esten Cooke (1830-1886), was acquainted with Confederate generals Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee, who were subjects of Cooke's writing.

Eveline Williams most likely is the widow of Macklin Williams. They are parents of Clara Williams who married John Strange of Clarke Co. VA in 1867.

These families are related to Reuben Strange who married Catherine Williams of Clarke Co., VA in 1879. Catherine's parents, Edward and Sallie Williams, also are parents of Millia A. Williams who married Stephen Strange of Clarke Co., VA in 1870. Reuben's parents are John and Cloe/Chloe Strange of Clarke Co., VA. Reuben Strange (c. 1856-1900) was a farm laborer in VA; but around 1885 he and Catherine moved to Pittsburgh, PA, where Reuben worked as a puddler in the iron or steel industry.
