[TX] Black demonstration in Galveston

Jul 1877

Approximately 50 black men in Galveston, Texas, march against low wages. This demonstration inspires domestic workers, who call themselves the Ladies of Labor, to strike in demand of higher wages and greater workplace autonomy. Washerwomen involved in the protest then turn their attention towards the Chinese laundries that have been undercutting them, demanding that they close their shops and leave, or risk being driven out of town
