New York State Census

1790- See Source

1825- See Source

1835- See Source

1845- See Source

1855: Names all members of the household; age; sex; color or race; relation to family head; county of New York, state, or country of birth; now married; now widowed; years resident in this city or town; profession, trade, or occupation; native voters; naturalized voters; aliens; colored persons not taxed; land owner; over 21 and illiterate; deaf, dumb, blind, insane, or idiotic. This census also includes enumerations of those who were married or died within the previous year. Unfortunately, they are practically useless, since the names of the married couple or the deceased were not given. For further information see David Davenport, "The State Censuses of New York, 1825-1875: GenealogiCllI ]OU11ll1/, 14(1985-6):187.

1865: Names all members of the household (including those absent in army or navy); age; sex; color; relation to family head; county of New York, state, or country of birth; parent of how many children; number of times married; marital status; profession, trade, or occupation; usual place of employment; native and naturalized voters; aliens; colored persons not taxed; owners of land; over 21 and illiterate; deaf, dumb, blind, insane, or idiotic; servicemen (lists those now or formerly in the army or navy of the U.S.). This census also includes enumerations for those who were married or died within the previous year. The marriage enumeration includes the names of the groom and bride, their ages, previous civil condition, the month and day of the ceremony, the city or town in which the marriage took place, and whether the marriage was solemnized by a clergyman, by a civil magistrate, or by declaration before witnesses. The death schedules include the name of the deceased, their age, sex, color, civil condition, month and day of death, state or country of birth (often the county of birth for those born in New York), occupation, and cause of death. For further information see the article by Davenport referred to above. Two towns in the 1865 state census have been found to have the special feature of including the maiden names of wives. These are Horseheads in Chemung County, and one election district of Watervliet in Albany County.

1875: Names all members of the household; age; sex; color; relation to family head; county of New York, state, or country of birth; marital status; profession, trade, or occuption; usual place of employment (those in military service list former home); native employment (those in military service list fonner home); native and naturalized voters; aliens; owners of land; over 21 and illiterate; deaf, dumb, blind, insane, or idiotic. This census also includes enumerations of those who were married or died within the previous year. The infonnation is the same as in 1865.

1892: Names all members of the household; sex; age; color; country of birth; citizen or alien; occupation, trade, profession, or kind of work done by each person. This census does not have dwelling house or family numbers, so it is sometimes difficult to tell where one family ends and another begins.

1905: Names all members of the household; relation to family head; color; sex; age; country of birth; number of years in the U.S.; citizen or alien; occupation, trade, profession, or kind of work done by each person; previous residence of Institutional Inmates before being admitted.

1915: Names all members of the household; color; sex; age; country of birth; number of years in the U.S.; citizen or alien; if naturalized, when and where (1925); occupation; previous residence of Institutional Inmates before being admitted; infants under one year.

1925: Same as 1915.
