Re: [AL] Carter & Abernathy in Colbert Cn

Hi, Anna. I'm thrilled to e-meet you. I've finally found someone else who has Colbert Co connections!
I am interested in the families Carter, Abernathy, Harvey, and Rice, although my main focus at the moment is on Carter. My gggrands were Thomas & Alabama Carter, who I've found in the 1870 census (both born around 1840). At least some of their children, my ancestors, took the name Abernathy. I think I have found the slaveholding family (or at least one of them), and now I am starting to try to link faceless bodies of the 1850 and 1860 slave schedules to names in the slaveholders' documents. The more I dig, the more I realize how big a task this will be. To really understand the slaveholding family, I think I am going to have to look into their records in Tennessee and Virginia, as well as their records in Alabama. Then there are the slaves who were given to the family as part of dowries ... Each discovery I make makes the work seem even harder!
