I did want to follow-up on something I put a previous response onn this. There was a LA law in 1825 that required that a manumitted slave leave the state of LA but but by 1831, the laws had be revised and the decision of whether the manumitted person had to leave the state was left up to the parish police jury. While this doesn't help you in finding more about Clara it does mean that Clara could have been a either freed slave as well as the child of a free person. A few of the Orleans Parish Rapp(e) owned slaves prior to the 1850 census. It's possible that one of them freed his/her slaves prior to the 1850 census. You'd need to look through the Orleans Parish court records.
