P. Fazzini. The life of Edgar [E.J.] Watson is detailed in a trilogy ['Killing Mr. Watson', 'Lost Man's River', and 'Bone by Bone'], written by novelist Peter Matthiessen.
I began reading 'Bone by Bone' and was hooked on the characters, but realized that I should read 'Killing Mr. Watson' first since several events referred to in 'Bone by Bone' were detailed in that novel. I was never able to obtain a copy of 'Killing Mr. Watson', so I did not finish 'Bone by Bone'.
I am a book lover and purchaser, but would not purchase 'Killing Mr. Watson' because, although the characters I met in the novel were fascinating, Mr Matthiessen liberally laced the novel with lengthy descriptions of the Everglades. These descriptive passages would go on and on, to the point I got frustrated.
Perhaps this is why I did not keep chasing the trilogy, and would not think of purchasing one of the novels. The relationship I developed with Mr. Matthiessen's writing was definitely a love/hate one.
Although fictional accounts, Mr. Matthiessen's novels may provide excellent, detailed information on this period in history and the location in which it took place. However, I never identified which was the first novel in the trilogy, and the way 'Bone by Bone' was written, I found that I definitely needed to have read 'Killing Mr. Watson'.
I hope this information helps.
