One of the most telling lines in this selection is, "Both sexes [former slaves] lost much of their native cheerfulness. . ." during the Reconstruction Period. Whenever told that the slaves were happy, I tend to disbelieve anything else written by the author. This writer is similar to U. B. Phillips in tone. Ugh!
