Re: [PA] Lynching of Z. Walker (Without Santuary)
I was born and raised in Chester County just west of Coatesville, and my family has been in the area for more than a few generations.
I have read everything I can find on this, and check the internet for more info every so often. I was talking with my Mom tonight and she mentioned she heard on the news that they were going to put up the marker. I asked her (she is 76) when that was going to be, and she said she didn't know but she heard it on the "tv news" one day last week. I did a google news search and only found 2 items. Here are the web addresses: http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061209/NEWS/61209004
"Plaque to mark 1911 lynching of black steelworker in Chester County, Pa." and
"Pa. State Commemorates Lynching With Mile Marker"
In part, one reads, "Today [Dec. 9, 2006], the state will unveil a historical marker commemorating the Aug. 13, 1911, lynching of Zachariah Walker, a black steelworker who was burned alive while thousands of Coatesville residents looked on".
I am local and check the local papers on the internet every morning. This is the first I heard of them placing a marker. If I had known about it, I would've gone. Sad it wasn't publicized, or if it was, I didn't see it.
