[AL] Hattie Lewis

Hello,

I am looking for information on my grandmother Hattie Lewis. Willie Lewis is listed on the death certificate, but there was no mother listed. She was born about 1912 because she died in 1950 and on the death certificate, it said she was about 38 years old. I think that her mother died early (guessing about 1919-1921). In the census of 1930 her sister, Juliette Lewis was in the household of Lucy and Dock Jones, Bessemer Twps, Jefferson County, AL as 10 years old. The story that I have right now is that the other children, Mary, Willie Lewis Jr., and my grandma Hattie remained in Perry County, supposedly with the other grandma (Willie Sr. mother). I don't know her name, but have looked in the 1920 and 1930 Heritage Quest census, and have not been able to find any of these children. I even looked to see if there was an orphanage or something, and came up with a blank. Any info regarding my grandma Hattie Lewis is appreciated. My grandma was married to Ike Underwood and I think she was his second wife.

I have sent away for Willie Jr., her brother's, SS5 application, maybe that will give me their mother's name. Did an Death Index lookup for her, but found nothing. My mother said that as far as she knows, she never worked while married to my grandfather. She died of TB in 1950. Do you think I can/should still send away for a birth certificate even if I don't have the mother's maiden name, but have the father's? I don't know. Just trying to get another lead on Hattie Lewis from Perry County.

Thanks,

Ginger
