there is a wonderful book about the flood that is a must-read. it's called 'rising tide:the great mississippi flod of 1927 and how it changed america.' author is john m. barry. it's in pb at barnes/noble fore $12. this is a fascinating read - the whole history of the percys and what happened to the black people who were forced to work on the levees at gunpoint while whites escaped is told in detail. in addition, the building of the levees and the reorientation of the river reveals a lot about why the katrina flood could happen the way it did. enjoy.
