Mrs. Martha Baker, 69, Providence Negro, died Thursday a few minutes after she was struck by a pickup truck driven by Willie Wayne Frederic. The accident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. on the part of Highway 85 known as the extension to U.S. Highway 41. The woman died shortly after she was taken to the office of Dr. J.R. Ferguson. Sheriff Carmon Pullam said it was brought out at the inquest conducted by Coroner J. Murray Blue that the woman who was walking toward Highway 41, stepped into the highway directly in the path of the truck which was being driven toward Providence. The coroner's verdict was that her death resulted from an unavoidable accident.
