Hello! I am not doing African American research, but as I understand it, there is not much information out there. I wanted to let you know that I got a great brochure from the Mercersburg (PA) Chamber of Commerce, which was in a package of other information I asked for. It is produced by the "Mercersburg Historical Architectural Review Board", and is a trifold glossy, color brochure which has some good information in it. It has some photographs of homes owned by emancipated slaves, a picture of the "Filkill" family (13 members), information on the colored troops they joined from the area (44 men from the area were inlisted in the 54th and 55th Massachusetts. This is in addition to the "United States Colored Troops or the United States Colored Cavalry.
"Included in the 54th Massachusetts volunteers were two sets of four brothers - the Christy's and the Krunkletons.
There are also 38 Civil War Veterans buried in the Zion Union Cemetery including 13 members of the 54th Massachusetts. The cemetery is still in use by the Mercersburg African American residents. As a Revolutionary and Civil War Buff (above), I know how hard the military information is to find, so thought maybe you can pass it on. I will also try to get information on the sourcet to some of the military web sites, but if we go much further, you will need to contact the publishers for the privilege of copying their information.
