Theodore 'Ted' McMillian, 1919-2006
Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals Senior Judge Theodore McMillian died
January 18, 2006 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis of complications
following kidney dialysis. He was born January 28, 1919 in St. Louis.
Judge McMillian was Missouri's first African-American state prosecutor,
Missouri Court of Appeals judge and first African-American 8th U.S.
Court of Appeals judge (1978). He was also the first African-American
named to Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Society. McMillian worked his way through
college as a janitor. He was a WWII vet (Army Signal Corps, 2nd Lt.) and
belonged to the American Judicature Society, Phi Beta Kappa, MO and
National Bar Associations. He had been an associate professor at the
University of MO since 1970. His funeral was held at St. Alphonsus
"Rock" Catholic Church, St. Louis. He was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery,
St. Louis. Funeral arrangements handled by Layne Renaissance Chapel, St.
Louis.
