After the Haiti slave revolution (Santa Domingo) many plantation owners left the Carribean. Quite a few went to South Carolina.
Also, Sullivan's Island off South Carolina was the key entry point to quarantine slaves before they enterred the Charleston slave market. It's the Black equivalent to Ellis Island. Sullivan Island is the location of Fort Moultrie, where an early Revoltionary War battle with the British took place. It is named after the General who headed the battle. The Moultrie name became famous after Americans won the early battle, and it was applied to a river basin and many land counties in the South.
